OpenOffice specifically for Mac OS X
Important Note: NeoOffice 3.3 is now Donationware and requires a donation of at least $10 within the last year to be downloaded. However, version 3.2.1 which supports up to Lion OS X 10.7 is still free to use.
NeoOffice is a welcome open source alternative to the pricier Microsoft Office and iWork'08 office suites. The application carries with it all the applications that you'd expect: word processing, spreadsheet, presentations, database and drawing.
You'll find the interface of NeoOffice and the range of tools in the office suite very similar to what you'd find in Microsoft Office. However, NeoOffice does load up much faster when opening up any document. Most tools open up in a new window so make sure you don't have too many open, otherwise the interface will look really cluttered.
All the different applications in the NeoOffice suite work well and are more than worthy replacements to the options available in Microsoft Office and iWork'08. The presentation tool is the only one I was disappointed with, as it doesn't offer as many templates or tools as I expected to create a shiny, professional presentation.
You'll find very thorough help docs and excellent wizards to master all elements of NeoOffice. NeoOffice has been most recently updated to be Mountain Lion compatible with Retina Macs. Please note that although NeoOffice used to be free, since NeoOffice 3.2 and above, it requires a donation of at least $10 a year before you can download it.
Although the presentation tool is a little weak, the rest of the applications in NeoOffice make for a very good free office suite.

NeoOffice text processor changes while working... ! Now, after the latest update was installed (2021-03-04), the font in my file shrunk: Times New Roman, in one file, but not in the second (help file, to compare). I cannot get it to the desired size somehow. Working with the Apple magic (cordless) mouse causes the program to not being able to work with the search field below. Its messages are only half visible too (e.g. reached the end...) and the text in it often changes back to previous searches. It does so while it searches, so you find the wrong text. Selecting text parts is often hard, because it selects more or less than you indicate with the mouse. Also, sometimes, inserting some text results in black little rectangles which eat the other existing text: only solution is to quit and restart this text processor. When deleting a word, the one space that would be too much and which vanishes in all other text processors I used, does not, so you have to click one unnecessary time more, which get you out of your concentration. Saving automatically does not work properly, because if I do not, at a given point in time the program gets sluggish and refuses to do what you tel it to do. Sometimes even resulting in the black little rectangles I mentioned. Deleting 'returns', of 'new paragraphs requires THREE clicks on the backspace key! That is a software thing that as an end user you do not need to be bothered with. Except from the size change, these problems exist for more than 10 plus years already.
This software is so specific, that I am unable to switch to another text program for this file, which is a glossary that develops over many years. The appearance would change too much. Microsoft and Apple change many things, so if you're working on files for many years, you find fonts disappeared, for instance, and some text files suddenly show strange character strings at beginnings and ends of texts and changed page layouts. Automation / ICT is about integration, not the reverse! People using computers are getting older now, so my demand is that hardware and software developers and producers keep that aspect user friendliness in the front of their minds.
To finish this: who knows how to get the original size of my font back (c.q. Times New Roman)? More
